Instagram Engagement Rate Formula
Understanding the engagement rate formula is essential for measuring your Instagram performance accurately
Standard Engagement Rate Formula
ER = (Likes + Comments) / Followers Γ 100%
The engagement rate formula divides total interactions by your follower count to produce a percentage. This is the most widely used method because follower counts are publicly available, making it easy to compare accounts and benchmark performance.
Alternative Engagement Rate Formulas
By Reach
ER = (Likes + Comments) / Reach Γ 100%
More accurate for measuring content performance, but requires access to Instagram Insights (business/creator accounts only).
By Impressions
ER = (Likes + Comments) / Impressions Γ 100%
Useful for measuring engagement relative to total views, including repeat views from the same users.
Extended Engagement
ER = (Likes + Comments + Saves + Shares) / Followers Γ 100%
Includes saves and shares for a more comprehensive view. Saves are particularly valued by Instagram's algorithm in 2026.
Per Post Average
ER = Avg(Post ER across N posts)
Averages the engagement rate across multiple posts for a more reliable metric. Our calculator uses this method with up to 18 recent posts.
